Cultural Competency for Providers

Cultural competency in health care is the ability for providers to deliver care to patients who have diverse values, beliefs, behaviors and cultures. A culturally competent provider and/or health system recognizes the importance of culture and how the care they provide impacts their community.

Why is Cultural Competency Important?

Cultural competency helps reduce disparities in health care by promoting seamless adaptation of services to meet unique needs throughout the community, including racial and ethnic disparities. It is Paramount's goal, in collaboration with our provider and health system partners, to foster a member centric care model which eliminates disparities based on race, ethnicity, culture, language and other social determinants of health.

What are the Impacts of Being Culturally Competent?

  • Increased patient satisfaction
  • Increased patient safety
  • Increased care efficiency
  • Increased a patient’s accountability of their own care
  • Increased trust from patient to provider
  • Decreased costs
  • Decreased care disparities
