What is Individual and Family Health Insurance?

Individual health insurance is coverage that you purchase on your own for yourself or your family, instead of through an employer or government program such as Medicare or Medicaid. It is designed for people who are self-employed or do not have access to employer-sponsored or government health plans. You may qualify for subsidies based on income and family size to help reduce costs.

Advantages of an Individual and Family insurance plan:

  • You are in control of choosing the insurance carrier and plan that is specific to your needs.
  • You can renew or switch health insurance plans or companies during the annual Open Enrollment Period.
  • You don’t have to worry about losing coverage because it is not dependent upon your employment status.
  • You can choose a plan in network with the doctors and hospitals you trust.
  • You may be eligible for a subsidy from the federal government to help pay for your insurance.
