Prescription Drug Benefits
Two things are most important when it comes to prescription benefits: effectiveness and affordability. That’s why our Prescription Drug Program is designed to give our members the safest, highest quality medications available—and all at a reasonable price.
How do we accomplish this goal? Our Prescription Drug Program is maintained by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Working Group, a committee of primarily pharmacists and physicians, which approves clinical prescribing programs and drug formularies in order to create a prescription drug benefit program favorable for both employers and members.
Cost-effective, rigorously tested generic drugs are the cornerstone of the drug formulary. To optimize therapeutic care for a number of conditions, our Pharmacy and Therapeutics Working Group also chooses preferred brands that we provide for our members at the lowest brand copay. This system ensures that we can provide our members with the best medicine available for the lowest possible cost. Learn more about our copay structure and Preferred Drugs.
Here are some facts about our Prescription Drug Benefits:
- Drug benefits are available in three of our commercial product lines (HMO, PPO, CDHP) with plans in Ohio and Michigan; Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange) plans; Medicare Part D plans; and Ohio Managed Medicaid.
- We are contracted with CVS/caremark for prescription claims processing, giving our members access to a national network of pharmacies. Mail order medications are available through Caremark.com
- Sometimes before a provider can write a prescription for a certain medication, they have to show Paramount that there is a medical necessity for the drug therapy, a process called prior authorization. Learn more about our prior authorization policies. Paramount’s Prescription Drug Program includes our Specialty Drug Program. Through the Specialty Drug Program, members can get costly or difficult-to-obtain drugs from a trusted specialty network of hospitals, pharmacies and mail order. Learn more about Specialty Drugs.
