
The leading causes of premature loss of life in the United States are personal behaviors that cause chronic illness and injuries. Changing unhealthy behaviors is the most beneficial way to reduce premature deaths. Over one third of US deaths can be attributed to four modifiable behaviors; smoking, poor diet physical inactivity and alcohol use. According to the Lucas County Adult Health Assessment 2007, 70% of Lucas County residents are overweight or obese, less than one third received an influenza immunization, nearly on quarter are smokers and less than half received recommended cancer screenings.
ProMedica Health System (Paramount, Total Wellness and Flower Hospital) is partnering with employers and the Sylvania community to improve the current and future health of Sylvania residents by sponsoring Healthy Sylvania 2010. Healthy Sylvania 2010 will provide free health screenings, health risk assessments, education, activities and challenges to improve the health of Sylvania residents. Free health promotion items will be provided to those participating in the monthly events and a prize winner for a fitness club memberships or other reward, will be selected each month.
During 4th quarter 2008 a pre-assessment survey was done by interns at schools, stores, and other locations in Sylvania to identify participants perceived health status and knowledge of risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, BMI and their ideal weight. Information from this assessment will be used to finalize topics for the Healthy Sylvania 2010 programs.
